What Is The Best Cookie Press and How Should I Use It?

Winter is one of my favorite seasons, but not for the cold, it’s the food that always amazes me. I love making slow cooked meals, warm and hearty dishes, and especially, desserts and sweet treats.

Cookies are a must in the cold, and in any season really, so I usually want to have the best tools and ingredients to create the best ones. I loved cookies like Oreos, which are good for a quick snack, but it’s good to also create your own.

This is why I found myself looking for the best cookie press, and why I decided to tell you today what choices are out there and which ones may serve you better next time you make some cookies!

Before we dig in though, let’s discuss why and how to use a cookie press, and what you can make with it!

Best Cookie Press and How Should I Use It?

What Exactly is a Cookie Press?

Best Cookie Press

A cookie press is a kitchen tool used to make pressed cookies. It’s a cylinder with a plunger on one end, used to force out cookie dough through a small hole on the other end. You can usually change the shape in which the cookie dough comes out, such as stars or spirals.

How to Use a Cookie Press

Using a cookie press is pretty simple, I found out how to use it the first time with these steps:

  • Roll out your cookie dough into a log shape, as it is easier to insert into the press. Make sure it is small enough to fit into your press. Once inside the press, push down the plunger, or crack down the handle, depending on your model.
  • Pick a cookie disc, you will usually have at least 10 different options.
  • Remove the ring from the cookie press barrel, and replace it with the disc you chose. This ring secures your disc to the press.
  • Place your cookie press standing vertically on top of a ungreased cookie sheet, make sure that the disc part of the press is touching the sheet. When you squeeze the trigger, a cookie shape should come out. Repeat the process until all your dough is on the sheet. This process requires the touch of a button if your cookie press is electric.
  • Refill your cookie press once empty. Repeat the steps until your cookies are ready to be baked.

Make sure you know how to use your cookie press and know how to make the best out of it!

Why Should I Use a Cookie Press?

  • Though a cookie press isn’t strictly necessary when making cookies, you should still use it when making Spritz cookies. These cookies are perfect for the holidays, for special occasions or just about any time that you want lots of colors and decoration.
  • The benefit of using a cookie press is that you will save time creating shapes, but it is also very precise and easy to use. If you want to make several cookies at a time, and you want to make the process faster and less messy, then a cookie press is perfect for you.

When you make cookies with your press, there will be a long list of possibilities for you to make. Here are some of my favorite cookies:

  • When you buy this press you get the ability to make large or small cookies with just the turn of a knob. You can make around 35 to 40 small cookies and 20 to 25 large cookies.
  • Using this press is very simple, all you have to do is remove the top cover, insert the cookie die or none, add the cookie dough, replace the top and press handle.
  • Repeat this process until all your cookies are ready to be baked.
  • This modern press can be disassembled for easier cleaning. You should though, wash it by hand with warm water and soap. The press is also delicate and should be cleaned carefully.

Before you buy a press like this, you may want to see how big it is and how much dough it will hold. The Marcato’s press will work well for making some family cookies or a small gathering.

Pros

   20 different biscuit shapes

  Easy to use

Makes uniform and good quality cookies

Cons

   Not dishwasher safe

   Holds small amount of dough

   Delicate to use

  • The Marcato Biscuit Cookie Press includes 20 accessories for different cookie shapes and pastries, including a brand new churro model. This press allows you to adjust the dough thickness, which is really good when you want to make all sorts of biscuits.
  • The Marcato press is delicate and made in Italy and should be washed by hand. This model is great for an experienced baker that loves to make cookies or biscuits every now and then, but as stated before, it may be too delicate and intricate for kids to use.
  • Marcato delivers an exemplary quality cookie press, but it may not hold enough dough for a large cookie sheet. This choice may be good for a smaller family or someone that likes baking various shapes of cookies.

Pros

   14 different cookie shape discs

  6 pastry nozzles for decorating

  Dishwasher safe

  Box for storage

Cons

   Harder to use

   Lower part comes apart easily

   Not as durable

  • This dishwasher safe cookie press comes with 14 steel discs with different designs. This press is made with stainless steel and allows you to press with a single hand, making it very easy to make cookies.
  • Also included with this press are 6 pastry nozzles so you can decorate cakes, cookies and more. It has a see through barrel, which makes it easier for you to see the amount of dough filled or left.
  • Though this model also disassembles easily, it may not hold itself together as strongly as other models. If you plan on making lots of cookies and make a variety of shapes, this may require you to manually hold the lower part of the barrel so it won’t come off due to the pressure.
  • The Kuhn Rikon cookie press comes with a nice storage box for safekeeping. However, you may consider this a “starting” kit if you are an avid baker and like to use your cookie press often. This press may not be as durable as other choices.

Pros

Clear cylinder for easy dough use

12 stainless steel cookie shape discs

   Kid friendly

  Easy to use

Cons

   Not dishwasher safe

   Plastic

   No long-time durability

  • The OXO Good Grips cookie press is a reliable tool for cookie-making. This model comes with 12 stainless steel cookie shape discs with patterns such as flower, sunflower, snowflake, tree, bear and shell among some.
  • Because of its non slip base, you may find that this press is more steady when using as it prevents it from moving as you press the dough out.
  • Also, the transparent cylinder allows you to see how much dough has been used or needs to be filled again.
  • As with the other models, the OXO cookie press disassembles rather fast and easy for cleaning, but it isn’t dishwasher safe and should be washed by hand too.
  • This model is probably the most kid-friendly as it doesn’t slip and is easy to use, so if you are planning on using this with your family, this may be the best choice. Plus, with the storage case you can always keep track of your discs and make sure no one loses any of these.

If you plan on using your press for professional baking, this press may not make the cut as it is plastic and after many uses or using too much force on it, this press may break. Additionally, as with all things plastic, the OXO press may give out after a few years.

Pros

   Easy to use

  12 different cookie shape discs

   4 mini cookie shape discs

Clear barrel for easy dough use

  Recipes included

Cons

   Not dishwasher safe

   Plastic

   No long-time durability

  • The Wilton Cookie Pro Ultra II cookie press is a fun press to use with your family. It comes with 12 different cookie shape discs, plus 4 mini cookie designs as well. When you get this, you will also get full instructions and recipes to make.
  • As with the OXO cookie press, the Wilton has a non slip bottom, keeping it steadier when using. This press is not dishwasher either, but comes apart for hand washing with warm water and soap.
  • The clear barrel is helpful as well, as it allows you to see the progress on your dough and know when exactly to fill it again.
  • Similarly to the OXO Good Grips cookie press, the Wilton Cookie Pro Ultra II is plastic, which makes it kid friendly and family friendly, but may not be durable on the long run.
  • You may want to buy this press as a family fun tool, or something to use every now and then, but you shouldn’t consider this the sturdiest press of all to use for professional baking.

I’m Ready to Get My Own Cookie Press Now

  • I have always thought that a cookie press is necessary in every household, at least for fun baking sessions with the family during the holidays. Though all of these are good options, I find the Marcato's Deluxe Atlas Biscuit Maker Cookie Press the best cookie press out there.
  • If you like to bake a lot, the Marcato Deluxe Atlas is a strong press that will definitely meet your expectations. If on the other hand, you want to have fun with the kids and use the press mostly for fun, then a plastic one like the OXO or Wilton are better choices.
  • In my opinion, go for the Marcato Deluxe Atlas as the best one, and the OXO as the second choice. But as always, I want to know what you think, let me know in the comments below!
