Have you heard about canning? Do you like preserves? I love them, and I now love making them too. Don’t worry it’s not as hard as it seems, but you do need some tips and equipment before you start, especially if you want to go big.

It all began when I decided to make my own jam for pancakes and thought how great it would be if I could just preserve it longer and have leftover for other brunch dates.​

  • When time is up, turn off the heat, and leave the jars inside for five more minutes.
  • Remove the jars carefully and let them cool down, this may take up to 12 hours.
  • Check the lids when your jars are cool. If everything is right, label your preserves and store them.

Each item has its own function so you should choose a specialized tool for each task. For example, use a springform pan to bake cake and a pressure cooker for canning. Because of safety and health reasons, when you begin canning meats, vegetables, and fruits at a larger scale, a pressure cooker is necessary. But if you have never used one, this may seem weird, don’t worry, there are pressure cookers that can suffice your needs and are easy to use.

Keep in mind, that a pressure cooker and a pressure canner are different. A pressure cooker is used to cook meats, vegetables, and other foods rapidly. Pressure canners on the other side, are bigger and they don’t heat up as quickly as pressure cookers.

So, what is a pressure cooker? It’s a pot that works with steam inside, as it builds up high pressure, the temperature rises, and it cooks food faster. In this case, you would a pressure cooker for canning by raising the boiling point of the water in the cooker.

Be careful about canning, steam and high temperatures can be dangerous. This is partly why I suggest the T-fal P31052 Polished Aluminum Pressure Canner as the second choice. It is also easy to use, very safe, durable, and big enough for all your canning needs.
